There was an awards ceremony today for more than 400 Brooklyn young people who participated in Summerscope 2003, a week-long free sports and entertainment day camp that culminated Friday. Borough President Marty Markowitz partnered with Coca-Cola and the IAAAM Foundation on the camp to motivate and inspire Brooklyn youth to achieve their greatest future potential. Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham was on hand to make the presentations.
“I know this has been a fantastic week for everyone involved. These young people will take these incredible experiences and use them as a springboard for future success. Brooklyn is a special place where dreams come true and legends are made every day,” Borough President Markowitz said. “This camp has imparted upon them that anything is possible with enough drive and determination. A special thanks to my dedicated partners – Coca-Cola and the IAAAM Foundation – for making this week such a success. Another big thank you goes out to Medgar Evers College for graciously donating its facilities for the entire week.”
This exciting and enriching summer experience began on Monday for Brooklyn youth, ages 11-17. The young people gained hands-on knowledge of the sports world and entertainment industry through basketball clinics with professional athletes and coaches, in addition to seminars with music and television executives on breaking into the entertainment industry. The camp took place at Medgar Evers College, where teens were given the opportunity to select either sports or entertainment activities for the week - “Take It to the Hoop” or “Take It to the Stage.”
There also was a basketball tournament and half-time show produced by the camp’s teens, and a free celebrity concert performance by “Young Steff” of Jay-Z’s Rock-a-Fella label.
Medgar Evers College Summer Youth Program, Bushwick Beacon Lighthouse, Flatbush Youth Association, Italian American Civil Rights League, East New York Betterment Association, the Jackie Robinson Center for Physical Culture, Prospect Park Youth Council, B.B.C.S. and other groups helped to recruit the campers.
