Borough President Marty Markowitz, State Senator Martin Malave Dilan, and Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade, Inc. President Enrique Sandoval announced this year’s exciting plans for the 10th Annual Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade, which is being held on Sunday, August 17th. The parade kicks off this Sunday at 1:00pm from the corner of Broadway and Graham Avenues in East Williamsburg.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for all of Brooklyn to get a taste of our vibrant and dynamic Puerto Rican community,” Borough President Markowitz said. “The Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade, which continues to grow every year, is a great way to celebrate and honor the heritage and all of the contributions and accomplishments of Puerto Ricans throughout Brooklyn. They’ve played an important role in making Brooklyn the greatest city in the world.”
"As the New York State Senator of the 17th Senatorial District and a person of Puerto Rican heritage, it is my immense pleasure to congratulate the Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade Inc. on their 10th anniversary!” Senator Dilan said. “The Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade is an event that all Puerto Rican residents of Brooklyn look forward to and take great pride in. This event celebrates the rich and beautiful culture of Puerto Rico - giving some a little taste of their home country and introducing those not familiar with the culture to its merit. It truly is a wonderful event which embraces all of Brooklyn."
The Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade, Inc. has also established a scholarship fund that helps send deserving students to college. This year it will provide $500 scholarships to three students - Magdalena Mangual, 37, who is attending Boricua College and is expected to graduate in June 2004; Linda Perez, 49, who also is attending Boricua College and is expected to graduate in June 2004; and Iris Vazquez, 30, another Boricua College student, expected to graduate in June 2005. The students will be honored at a banquet at the Palonaise Terrace in Greenpoint on Friday, August 15th at 8:00pm. For more information on the parade or the banquet call 718-599-5200 or 718-599-5083.
