BOROUGH PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES DONALD WEBER, HIS APPOINTMENT TO THE PANEL FOR EDUCATIONAL POLICY, IS STEPPING DOWN
Borough President Marty Markowitz announced that his appointment to the Panel for Educational Policy, former District 21 Superintendent Donald Weber, will step down effective December 31st. Mr. Weber was appointed to the Panel in August 2002 and his term was set to expire in June 2004.
“I greatly appreciated the opportunity given to me by Borough President Markowitz, but I felt I could not participate on the Panel any longer,” Mr. Weber said. “I felt that my voice, and many others on the panel, wasn’t being heard. As Chancellor Klein continues implementing major changes throughout the educational system, this board must play a greater role in representing the parents of New York City’s more than 1 million public school students.”
“I hate to see Donald Weber go, but I can certainly understand his frustration. After his years of distinguished educational service and being a parent of a child in the system, he knows what real parental involvement is all about, and he did everything he could to make sure that was happening,” Borough President Markowitz said. “With just over six months left in his term, and with all of the recent changes going on throughout the Department of Education, he felt it was better to step down now and not wait until June. I’m going to do everything within my power to make the Panel of Educational Policy more responsive and responsible to the consumers of our school system, the children and their parents. This panel represents the highest level of parental input in New York City, and I’m going to appoint another vocal Brooklynite who will strongly and relentlessly advocate for the needs of our children and their parents.”
Mr. Weber served for 17 years as the superintendent of School District 21 and was named the Superintendent of the Year in 1999 by the New York State Council of School Superintendents. Under his leadership, District 21’s standardized test scores were continually amongst the highest in Brooklyn.
Borough President Markowitz will be conducting an extensive search to replace Mr. Weber as quickly as possible.
