BOROUGH PRESIDENT COMMENDS THE LAUNCHING OF NEW POLICE PROGRAM AIMED AT REDUCING AND PREVENTING VIOLENT CRIMES
“I want to commend Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly for launching Operation Impact to try and reduce serious and violent crimes, and target gangs and narcotics, in select Brooklyn precincts and across New York City,” Borough President Markowitz said. “Like everyone else in Brooklyn, I was horrified by the recent random shooting of 2-year-old Soribel Batista in the eye, the homicide of Meisha Hubbard, who was killed while watching television, and the death of 15-year-old Ernesto Reyes, who was shot dead right outside his apartment building. On January 3rd, I called on the Police Commissioner to allocate the necessary resources to the specific Brooklyn precincts to help ensure that our streets continue to remain safe, and that these senseless acts of violence are not repeated. Among my highest priorities is getting every single illegal gun out of Brooklyn. Placing more police officers on the streets, in addition to highly visible Field Command Posts throughout the impact zones, will be important new tools to help the NYPD achieve that very important goal. As always, I am working closely with Commissioner Kelly, Chief Joseph Cunneen and Chief Joseph Fox to make sure that Brooklyn continues to be among the safest places to live and work.”
Operation Impact will be implemented in the following Brooklyn precincts & neighborhoods – 67th in Flatbush, 70th in Flatbush, 71st in Crown Heights, 73rd in Brownsville, 75th in East New York, & 77th in Bedford Stuyvesant.
