Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz Urges Brooklyn Residents to
Apply for Positions on Community Boards

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is urging Brooklynites to apply for volunteer positions on their local community boards.

"This is what Democracy is all about," said Borough President Markowitz. "It’s a chance for every-day Brooklynites to get involved in local government and work to improve their communities."

Community Boards are advisory bodies made up of 50 members who serve on a non-paid basis. Members must attend monthly full-board meetings, serve on a minimum of one committee and attend each committee’s monthly meeting. Committees usually include: Land Use, Youth/Education, Social Services, Public Safety and Transportation.

Members must live within the boundaries of the community board they apply to, or have a business interest in the district (members may work or own a house in the community).

"Community Boards are usually the first place important local issues--like real estate development and liquor licenses--get discussed and voted on," continued Borough President Markowitz. "Serving on a community board is a wonderful way to know what's going on in your neighborhood, and a fantastic way to make sure your community is getting the services it deserves."

There are 18 community boards in Brooklyn. To obtain an application, please call Borough President Markowitz’s Constituent Services Department at 718 802-3883. Applications must be postmarked by March 15.
