BP HELPS BREAK GROUND FOR A NEW PLAYGROUND AT P.S. 109
Borough President Marty Markowitz took part in a groundbreaking ceremony today
for a new playground at P.S. 109. Currently, this school has no auditorium,
no gym and no play facilities for the 600 children who attend the school.
The Borough President contributed $200,000 in funding to help turn this former
parking lot into a brand new playground so these children will finally have
an outdoor space to call their own.
“I am delighted to be here today to celebrate the groundbreaking for
this new playground for P.S. 109,” the Borough President said. “I
was very pleased to be able to contribute $200,000 towards this very important
project. Today’s groundbreaking is proof of what parental involvement
in our children schools can accomplish. It is your perseverance and activism
that brought us to this day. Congratulations to you, the parents!”
“It is indeed exciting to join Borough President Markowitz in providing
additional funds of $200,000 towards the beautiful and much needed playground
at P.S.109,” said Council Member Yvette Clarke. “With this groundbreaking,
we are planting the seeds for children of this community today and for generations
to come.”
“The students who attend this school, never get the opportunity to get
outside, get fresh air, run or play,” said Denise Talley, Principal of
P.S. 109. “This playground will finally allow the 550 plus students who
attend P.S. 109, the opportunity to now have this experience. This has truly
been a labor of love on behalf of many, many individuals who have spent countless
hours volunteering their time, expertise and most importantly, the necessary
funding to make this dream become a reality. Who said dreams don’t come
true?”
“It just goes to show you what great things can happen when everyone
who cares about the children of P.S. 109- from the UFT and its chapter leader
Briget Rein, to the Borough President, the City Council, the State Assembly
and the Department of Education – works together to get these kids something
they really need, “ said United Federation of Teachers President Randi
Weingarten.
The Department of Education also provided $157,000 in funding for the playground.
P.S. 109 PTA Co-President Lisa Ramsay was also in attendance.
