BOROUGH PRESIDENT KICKS OFF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH A BOROUGH HALL CELEBRATION
Borough President Marty Markowitz kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a
celebration at Borough Hall to honor a number of Hispanic Brooklynites who have
made invaluable contributions to the betterment of the borough.
“The Hispanic community is one of the largest of Brooklyn’s 93
ethnic groups, and it has had one of the largest cultural impacts on our borough.
With 23 different Hispanic countries represented in Brooklyn, Hispanic Americans
bring a richness and vitality to the life of the borough and its neighborhoods.
We are enriched by your family values and community pride, nourished by your
cuisine and uplifted by your music,” said Borough President Markowitz.
“Hispanic Brooklynites have made their mark in every field of endeavor
– from science, business and government, to the arts and health services.
Your culture has become a part of Brooklyn life for everyone. This evening,
we will share our pride in Brooklyn’s Hispanic community by honoring organizations
and individuals whose contributions have helped to make Brooklyn the greatest
place in the world to live and work.”
The honorees include: Uvalda Alvarado, an immigrant entrepreneur; Musica Against
Drugs founder Manny Maldonado; NY 1 Reporter Jeanine Ramirez; Justice Reinaldo
