BOROUGH PRESIDENT STRONGLY OPPOSES PROPOSED 1100-MEGAWATT POWER PLANT IN GREENPOINT-WILLIAMSBURG
"This proposed power plant is simply incompatible with current and
planned land uses for one of Brooklyn’s most precious and underutilized
resources, its waterfront,” said Borough President Markowitz. “The
Greenpoint-Williamsburg community has worked so many long years to improve
and open up waterfront access, advocating a mix of residential, open space
and commercial uses. And all of that dedication and hard work is about
to start paying tremendous dividends. In the near future, new proposed
zoning changes will result in thousands of desperately needed new housing
units, waterfront esplanades, parks and new retail development. The 1100-megawatt
power plant will only detract from the value of our waterfront and threaten
its economic viability.
“Furthermore, the public health of the Greenpoint and Williamsburg
residents is already compromised by excessive air pollution. There are
no conceivable benefits from the proposed project that would justify the
construction of this mammoth power plant. I will do all that I can to
make sure that this power plant never gets built."
TransGas Energy is now formally seeking approval from the New York State
Board of Electric Generation Siting and the Environment.
The Borough President has been fighting against the proposed plant with
Assemblyman Joe Lentol, Councilman David Yassky and various community
groups.
