On December 15th, Borough President Marty Markowitz hosted the unveiling
ceremony of the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance at Keyspan Park honoring
the 115 fallen firefighters from Brooklyn firehouses who made the ultimate
sacrifice on September 11, 2001.
“Today we are here to honor a special group of New Yorkers –
115 individuals who left us with images of bravery and dedication so very
striking, that those images will continue to inspire an entire generation
of Americans,” said Borough President Markowitz. “The firefighters,
rescue workers and officers who were lost while helping others were in
the prime of their lives. That the life we see in the faces that grace
this wall has been extinguished is terribly difficult to bear. Each of
these firefighters left behind legacies of lifelong friendships and loving
families. This memorial is a greatly needed focal point for those families,
friends and other loved ones.”
A 20-foot wide by 12-foot high memorial and two 6-foot tall bronze statues
was unveiled at the ceremony honoring those we lost.
This project is a collaboration of the Ebbets Field Wall of Remembrance
Foundation, the Brooklyn Cyclones, the New York City Fire Department,
the Uniformed Fire Officers Association and the Uniformed Firefighters
Association.
